You'll find such a spot in Hólmavík, a fishing village located in northwest Iceland. Café Riis offers a menu mainly consisting of pizza and local fish dishes. It was actually my first time visiting a restaurant that featured cod cheeks on the menu. For those who haven't tried them before, cod cheeks are the most flavorful part of the cod and severely underrated. However, we skipped the fish because the lamb seemed even more intriguing. At Café Riis, the fillet is served with a centimeter thick layer of fat, scored and fried to create a crispy crackling on top. This fat also adds more flavor to the meat and definitely shouldn't be cut away. It tastes fantastic! Butter fried potatoes, baby carrots, and bell peppers played their parts as a delicious backdrop, giving the dish depth. A delicate béarnaise cream topped it all off. Simply delightful! My wife and I had just finished an active day in Ísafjörður, and after three hours on the road, we were quite tired and hungry when we arrived in Hólmavík. A warm thank you to both the waiters and chefs at Café Riis for giving our day a perfect ending. ”

Service is friendly and environs comfortable and relaxing. Prices reasonable for what is served. We stopped by Cafe Riis for lunch while driving around the Westfjords recently. The salted cod and lamb fillet were very nicely prepared in the kitchen and beautifully served plates. Both tasted quite good and were worth reordering. Would have tried a dessert as well had we not felt full enough after lunch. Overall, Cafe Riis seems like a good choice for those looking for a good place to take a driving rest and enjoy lunch in Holmavik. We'd have no problem eating here again. ”

We were lucky bc we could get seated right away, but by the time we left the place was packed. You might have to bring a little patience depending on when you go. We highly recommend this restaurant, the local pride of the owner shows and these are the places I want to support, especially this far into the country side. Well done! ”
